Self-Care: Pick 3 for Today

Let’s be honest: the world has turned self-care into a performance. Bubble baths, spa days, and expensive face creams are lovely if you want them, but for most of us, our true self-care needs to fit into a life that’s already full. It can’t be another trendy thing or a source of guilt because you didn’t “do it right.”

Here’s the radical truth from my book Wellness After 40 for Women: A Reinvention Plan for Stress Relief, Healthy Habits, Confidence & Vitality: self-care doesn’t have to be long, expensive, or dramatic to matter. On hard days, or even just regular busy days, one of the kindest things you can do is choose three supportive actions and let that be enough. No pressure to overhaul your life, just three little signals to yourself: “I matter, too.”

Pick 3 for Today: The Simple Self-Care Reset

Choose one from each area below or just pick the three that feel most supportive right now. There’s no wrong answer. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s gentle support.

Body

  • Drink a full glass of water. Hydration is basic, but it’s also powerful.
  • Eat something with protein, even a handful of nuts or yogurt.
  • Go for a 10-minute walk. Fresh air and movement reset your mind and body.
  • Stretch for 5 minutes. Release tension, invite relief.

Mind

  • Put your phone away for 20 minutes. Give your brain space to breathe.
  • Write down what’s stressing you. Sometimes naming it is enough.
  • Take five slow, deep breaths. It’s a reset you can do anywhere.
  • Read something calming for 10 minutes. An inspiring chapter, a favorite poem, or even a magazine.

Environment

  • Make your bed. One small act of order can make the whole room feel different.
  • Tidy one surface. Clear your desk, your nightstand, or the kitchen counter.
  • Open a window. Let in fresh air and new energy.
  • Light a candle or create a calmer corner. Sometimes beauty is its own medicine.

Why This Works – Small choices create traction. When life feels heavy, scattered, or just “too much,” picking three supportive actions from my book Wellness After 40 for Women, it gives you something real to stand on. It’s not about fixing everything at once or chasing the myth of a perfect day. It’s about making things a little bit better, right now, in real life.

You’ll be amazed at how these tiny resets can ripple out. Drinking water leads to better choices. A five-minute stretch releases more than just physical tension. Tidy one corner, and suddenly the whole room feels fresher and so do you.

Most importantly, the act of choosing signals to yourself that even on days when everything else feels out of control, you can pick three small kindnesses. That is enough.

Tips to Make It a Habit

  • Make a “Pick 3” list you can glance at in the morning or whenever you need a reset.
  • Don’t wait for a crisis. Use this routine on good days too, to anchor yourself in small wins.
  • Celebrate completion (not perfection). When you’ve done your three, pause and notice how you feel, lighter, calmer, a little more you.
