Blindness by Jose Saramago
The book ‘Blindness‘ by Jose Saramago (Ensayo Sobre la Ceguera) is a heavy fictional story about a deadly epidemic, making everyone exposed to a virus become blind. In the story, those who became sick were isolated for quarantine and secluded in a hospital to avoid spreading the disease. In the middle of that blindness, some blind patients started showing their true humanity and spirit. One woman at the hospital could still see and kept it a secret. She ended up witnessing the behavioral changes from the contagious blind patients. It is through her eyes and narration that we learn the whole story happening inside the hospital.
This book talks about blindness as a physical disability. But also as a cultural, ethical, and moral problem. The question from this book: Do we live in a society blind to the pain of others? This book left me speechless. I couldn’t stop reading. One of the scenes inside the hospital was horrifying. Blindness is the type of book that forces us to analyze the details of our day-by-day habits in life. It talks about the privilege of enjoying our senses and the many small things we take for granted.
